Introduction to PoCF

The Port of Cromarty Firth (PoCF) is the largest Port in the Scottish Highlands and one of the deepest, most sheltered ports in the UK.
The Cromarty Firth hosts Scotland’s leading port facilities for offshore wind developments, having supported more projects than any other Scottish port. This significant track record includes the 588MW Beatrice offshore windfarm, the 950MW Moray East offshore windfarm, the 50MW Kincardine floating offshore windfarm and the 30MW Hywind floating offshore windfarm. The Port has also supported a number of onshore windfarm projects, including the 47MW Corriemoillie and 71MW Gordonbush windfarms.
The Cromarty Firth is perfectly located to support central and northern North Sea energy developments, including a large number of the ScotWind leasing sites. It offers sheltered, deep-water berths with no tidal or weather constraints. This means 24/7/365 unrestricted access to facilitate quick vessel turnarounds and optimise vessel chartering costs. There is also a well-established, experienced onsite supply chain with extensive offshore engineering, manufacturing and logistics expertise.
Over £50 million has been invested in the PoCF infrastructure since 2014 to support the growing offshore renewables industry. The Port now offers one of the largest laydown facilities in the UK, with over 80,000sqm of open laydown area alongside a 372m quay at 12m water-depth. Coupled with this are multiple deep-water berths, over 40,000sqm of additional laydown space, manufacturing workshops and onsite office units to support projects onsite. The Port is actively investigating further infrastructure expansions in order to grow its capacity and support this exciting and growing sector.
PoCF is leading an ambitious and collaborative initiative, Opportunity Cromarty Firth, exploring the opportunity for the Cromarty Firth to become a strategic renewable energy hub and Freeport zone, to capitalise on a significant and sustainable future pipeline of supply chain opportunities. The initiative is centred around accelerating the deployment, increasing the innovation, and reducing the costs of renewable energy projects taking place across Scotland. It will increase local content options through new manufacturing facilities, a future renewable energy R&D centre and capitalise on opportunities in green hydrogen.
The Port is a founding partner of DeepWind; Scotland’s supply chain cluster of excellence in deep water offshore wind energy. The cluster now features over 500 members drawn from industry, academia and the public sector and is the largest offshore wind supply chain cluster in Europe. DeepWind has ambitions to attract more offshore wind projects to the region, bringing investment and long-term sustainable employment with them.

Queens Dock

The Port of Cromarty Firth’s Queen’s Dock offers a 150m quayside with a minimum water depth between 9 to 11.4m. It features a 20,000sqm laydown area with 7t/sqm ground load-bearing capability.
This sheltered facility has established itself as one of the leading facilities in Europe for the inspection, repair and maintenance of oil and gas drilling rigs, offering great protection for underwater work. Queens Dock is an ideal facility for similar underwater work required on floating offshore wind turbines and has already been used to support the 50MW Kincardine Floating Offshore Windfarm.

Berths 5

Port of Cromarty Firth constructed its £25m Berth 5 in 2015, creating a new 154m quayside with a minimum water depth of 12m. Berth 5 features a large adjacent laydown area totalling 45,000sqm and has a ground load-bearing capability which ranges from 7.5 to 12t/sqm, with the ability to handle much heavier loads when adequately spread.
In 2017, Berth 5 supported the 588MW Beatrice offshore windfarm for the storage and marshalling of subsea piles and jacket foundations. Beatrice is currently Scotland's largest constructed offshore wind farm and is capable of generating enough wind energy to power approximately 450,000 homes.
In 2019, the site supported the 100-turbine 950MW Moray East offshore windfarm for the storage and marshalling of subsea pile foundations. Once constructed, Moray East will be one of the largest operational offshore windfarms in the world and will generate enough wind energy to meet 40 percent of Scotland’s entire electricity demands.

Berths 2, 3 & 4

Port of Cromarty Firth’s Berths 2, 3 and 4 offers a 288m quayside with a minimum water depth between 9.4 to 14m, allowing it to accommodate vessels up to 300m in length.
The adjacent laydown area to Berths 2, 3 and 4 is approx. 20,000sqm and there are manufacturing workshop facilities and office units next to the berths in order to support projects and clients. Ground load-bearing capability for this laydown area is 7t/sqm, with the ability to handle heavier loads when adequately spread.
The berths regularly accommodate oil & gas drilling rigs, large cruise vessels and other offshore support vessels. It was successfully used by the 588MW Beatrice offshore windfarm for the storage and marshalling of jacket foundations and is one of the few berths in the country able to accommodate vessels as large as the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carriers.

Berth 6

In 2019, the Port of Cromarty Firth commenced construction of Berth 6. This latest infrastructure expansion will create a new 218m quayside with a minimum water depth of 12m. The development will also create a 47,300sqm laydown area. The ground load-bearing capability for this laydown area ranges from 7.5 to 12t/sqm, with heavy lift pads on the quayside to ensure the largest structures and cranes can be accommodated.
Combined, Berths 5 & 6 will allow the Port to offer a 372m quayside with a minimum water depth of 12m and over 80,000sqm of open laydown area. This will be one of the largest laydown facilities in any UK port, making it the ideal location for offshore wind and floating offshore wind projects. The site will be able to accommodate the largest offshore support vessels as well as major offshore wind components, such as turbine blades, tower sections and nacelles.
The Port is also investigating a further expansion to the Berth 5 and 6 laydown areas, in order to grow its capacity and support this exciting and growing sector.
